Quiltfolk Magazine

I have had photos of my quilts in magazines before, but I always had to send my own photographs for those. This was the first time someone came to me to photograph my work. In fact, they sent two people. Azuree Wiitala was the photographer, and she spent most of the time running around my house and yard taking photos. Trevor Holloway took my quilts, one at a time, and very respectfully and gently styled them for the photos. He also did a great job of light-shifting, which mean that he held up big reflectors to help move the light to a better position during some of the photographs. I ran back and forth from being the subject of the photo to consulting with the quilts and assisting Trevor.  It was kind of mind boggling, the number of photos and the number of quilts, just to get a handful of really great ones that made it into the magazine. And it was fun!

Azuree Witala, I managed to snap a photo of her in my studio while she was photographing me.

Trevor Holloway, holding up my quilt, One Earth, on my deck and hiding behind it so that he won't be in the photo.

Me in front of my newly completed quilt top, Rainbow Gardens.

Here are a few more of my favorite out-takes. The first three are the required "have the quilter pointing at something" shots.  Although the pointing thing may be interesting, to me it is significant and special because the artists hands are what make the quilts. Love these shots!
My absolutely favorite part of making these batik panels (aside from the colors) were the painting of the hot wax to make the white dots.  From my quilt, Butterflies.

Again, this dotted fabric was made in my batik studio.  I drew every white dot with hot wax.  Very contemplative experience, and I like the way it looks, and I 'needed' it for this part of the quilt, Caterpillars.

A random stack of my journal quilts, which helped me in my journey to become an art quilter.

There is a picture of my cat, Pumpkin Pi, in the last few pages of this issue, but I like this one better.  The little photo bomber is standing on his cat shelf, next to the little cat quilt, Innocence

The antique desk just under the little quilt was a gift from my neighbor, Lucy Milliron. She was also an artist and made the most exquisite watercolors of the natural world.  When she died, it broke my heart. We were very close friends and she had become a part of our family. She was 88 and her husband had died a full 10 years before her. They used to travel a lot and I used to keep a watchful eye on their house while they are gone.  I am still doing that even though they don't live there anymore.

There is another part of Lucy that stays in my studio, also captured by Azuree. This photo is significant to me because it captures so much in one small photo:
When Lucy died, I kept her paint brushes.  They are sitting in yellow wooden blocks that her husband Walter made for her by drilling in holes of different sizes for her brushes.  Such a sweet gesture, one of love and support.  And, though you can't quite see, there is a framed photo sitting between the rows of them on one of their fishing trips to Rockport, TX.  I think of them both every time I grab a brush.

In the very front is a framed postcard made by my good friend Frances Holiday Alford. She invited me to join the Art Quilt Bee.  Our bee members used to meet at her house (until she moved to Vermont) and make group quilts together. So many fond memories of our times together! And, it was a nice surprise to see her quilt in the same issue.  She has a quilt in the section on the Texas Quilt Museum.

The paper figure of a girl was an exercise from a class I took called Lifebook.  I learned a lot about mixed media in that class and have gone on to continue making mixed media pieces to play with design.  After I get a thick stack of pages, I bind them together into books.  Now, I also love making books!

I also like this staged photo of me using a tjanting tool.  It is a batik tool that allows me to put fine lines of liquid wax on a piece.  It is very different than stamping designs with a tool.  It is much harder to control and requires a lot of patience.  It is more fickle to things like temperature control and composition of the wax. In the picture below, I would never use this tool on the piece that is front of me (that one is made by stamping with an object, in this case, a piece of cardboard packing material from something that was shipped to me). I am holding a folded paper towel to catch the drips.  It is THICK with many many drops of wax.
This tool was used to make the next two quilts.
A Few of My Favorite Things

And, though this one was an outtake, I have seen it in a promotional spot with several other quilt artists on Facebook. The Heron, the Kayak, and the Grebes: Part I

This next set I like because the light, color and angles were so very good!

And, last is a photo of my quilt, Bloom.  It was hanging on the zip line outside when the sun peeked through.  All afternoon we had been chasing the light.  A great photograph is made with a good photographer, a good subject, and perfect lighting.  That afternoon we were fighting intense glaring sunlight.  It finally paid off for this one because it backlit the quilt.  And, we can see the other side which is my quilt, Seeds! Perfection!!

Bloom

That's about it for the photoshoot.  You can see more photos on my Instagram and Facebook accounts. I will say that working with Quiltfolk was a dream.  They were so incredibly professional and the process of putting together a story was seamless.  I really like that they did copy checks/fact checking with me about both the stories and the photos. I have had that go wrong on many occasions with other publishers who skipped this essential step.  I also like that I was included in the social media promotion.  And, I liked that they sent me a free copy of the magazine.  This used to be an industry standard. However, the world is changing, and this kindness and respect is rarely offered to artists. My hat is off to you Quiltfolk! Respect and appreciation!

Modern Quilts the book!

Modern Quilts
the book!
see page 86!

I have finally received my copy of Modern Quilts: Designs of the New Century by Riane Menardi, Alissa Haight Carlton, and Heather Grant.  The book is fantastic! And, I'm not just saying that because my quilt is in it!

It is a delightful visual feast full of incredible modern quilts.  Eye candy for the image junky! I love this book, and please don't laugh at the reason why, it doesn't have too many words.  I do love to read, but for quilts, I like looking at the pictures.  And this is one of those books that is full of fabulous pictures. I have been pouring over the pages, and adding new quilt artists to follow on Instagram, and then repeating.  Plus, all proceeds from the sales go towards helping the Modern Quilt Guild.  The authors did a wonderful job of curating images for this very special collection!  Kudos!

As for my quilt? I am incredibly honored and humbled to be included in this collection of talented artists.  You can read more about i Quilt here (when it won best in show)

or here, when I blogged about how it was made.

Mostly, I am just so excited to be part of the Modern Quilt movement.  The book discusses how the Modern Quilt Guild got started, which somehow escaped my radar.  I remember when I heard about the Austin Modern Quilt Guild and started attending meetings.  But the biggest impetus for me was when QuiltCon began in Austin.  Since I live here, it was easy to attend, and I did. I loved, loved, loved the quilts.  And, because I am old and slow, it took one of the younger generation to tell me about Instagram.  (Thank you so much for that, Heather Grant!!!).  Instagram was where I learned about hashtags and helped me connect in a much more efficient and daily way with other modern quilters.  It changed my world.

Meanwhile, I thought it might entertain you to see some never before shots of the i Quilt.  :)

Cover Girl!

Cover Girl!

I am so pleased to have my quilt, One Earth, chosen for the cover of Machine Quilting Unlimited for the months of July and August!!  It has been a long time since I have been in the quilting magazines, mostly my own fault because I almost never submit anything.  For those few publishers who find me and seek me out, I usually agree, but I wasn't expecting the cover!  Very cool!

There is also a fantastic article (if I do say so myself!) about my work, and a lot of photos.  I find it extremely gratifying to have my work in this beautiful quilting magazine, and they got all the colors right!  My quilts from this time period were a bit on the bright side, and it is hard to do them justice in print media or on computer screens, but these folks got it right!  Kudos!

Here are some shots of my work.  If you want to read the article, you will have to buy a copy!

Welcome Home

Welcome Home
12" x 12" x 1 1/2"

Colorful Fabric Collage
by Sue Bleiweiss

Last year I was invited to submit a small fused quilt to be included in Sue's book.  I made this happy little quilt and was delighted that it was included in her book.  The book is available for preorder from Amazon.  I haven't seen it yet, but I look forward to it!  As for my little quilt, here it is!
The hand dyed sky fabric and the hand-dyed floss is from my good friend Laura Wasilowski. I love her color sense and her fabrics.  You can buy her fabric and threads and patterns here.
Perhaps you recognize this little bird from my other quilts with little birds (here)?
This 12" x 12" x 1 1/2" piece was wrapped around a canvas, so I used this fun black and white print for the side borders and wrapped the roof around.  LOVE!
Thanks for stopping by!  I hope to blog about my adventures in Houston soon.  I am exhausted from the travel and still unpacking!

Houston Quilt Festival

Houston Quilt Festival

I am super pleased to share with you that my quilt, Suburbs, won an Honorable Mention in Houston this year! Usually that information is not shared with the winner until the awards ceremony on Tuesday night.  However, since my award is not one of the big money winners, they let me know before.  It is rather nice not having the anxiety of waiting to know!  And since I LOVE this quilt, I am pleased to see it getting some attention and appreciation.  I love that the rich and full bodied colors in this quilt look exceptional on the black background.  And upon closer inspection the quilting (both machine and by hand) brings a wonderful texture to the piece!  I am grateful and proud that it got juried into Houston, and also very happy that the judges liked it too!
You can read more about the story behind it here.

I also had another entry accepted to Houston, Out of the Box.  I can't remember which category it is in.  You can read it's story here.  I am also very delighted that this one will get to be seen in public!
And, my third of three quilts in Houston is The Deep End.  It will be exhibited in the Dinner at Eight Artists exhibit called "Reflections".  I cannot wait to see the entire exhibit!
And, the last of my wonderful Houston news this year is that Jamie Fingal and Leslie Jenison have published another book of the quilts in the Dinner at Eight exhibits, and this one includes ALL the quilts from this year and all the previous years.  It is called Women Who Come to the Table.  And a bit of a surprise is that I found out that I am one of the Fab Four!  I didn't know there was such a thing!  Apparently, 4 artists in our group had quilts juried into this exhibit every year and I am one of those.  Very cool! The book includes many wonderful photos from our times celebrating together in Houston and some recipes too!
You can buy one here!

Quilting Arts Magazine

Quilting Arts Magazine

Good morning!  I am so excited to tell you that I have been published in the following Quilting Arts issue!  My article is about my quilt, Fresh Plus, which you have seen here, and won an Honorable Mention at QuiltCon.  In the article, I give directions on how to make the little window blocks used in this quilt.

Also, my good friend Jamie Fingal is the cover girl!  I have loved her work for years and am delighted to see it showcased here.  Kudos Jamie!

Here are some close ups of my little quilt, Fresh Plus.

On the Quilt Scene with Quilting Arts

On the Quilt Scene with Quilting Arts

I knew that my quilts were being considered for publication in this magazine, but I didn't know if they had gotten in or not....until someone got a copy and told me.  It was pretty exciting, but I was looking forward to seeing for myself.  Then I got a copy and I was blown away!  The images were so beautiful and they gave me close ups of my work.  TOO NICE!  Thank you so much Quilting Arts!  And the other photos in this issue were awesome, some of my absolute favorites.  Feels like this issue was made just for me!

And, I am a fairly good photographer, if I do say so myself! But I have a hard time getting the colors accurate, and well, these photos are perfect!
And, after arriving at the quilt show in Houston on Sunday, we got a show catalog.  Low and behold, one of my quilts was in the catalog.  It was for the exhibit Rituals, and my quilt Morning Commute with Sweet Jane was there!

Synchronized Swimming returns for another lap around the block!

Synchronized Swimming returns for another lap around the block!

A while back, I wrote an article about how I made the 3D fish for this quilt, Synchronized Swimming, and it was published in Quilting Arts Magazine.  Well, they have collected a number of articles about embellishments and are offering it in an Ebook.  I am delighted to find out that my quilt will be in the book!

Excitement in the Air!!

Excitement in the Air!!
Tomorrow the International Quilt Festival opens in Long Beach, CA for 3 days.  I have a new piece making it's debut there and it is a bit of a sentimental piece for me, Morning Commute with Sweet Jane (here, and here).  It is in the exhibit called Rituals curated by Dinner @ 8 artists, Jamie Fingal and Leslie Jenison.  It is sponsored this year by Moore's Sewing Centers. And even though I will not be able to attend the new opening of the show, it will travel to Houston this fall, and I can not wait to see it!!

Additionally the book, which has all the quilts in it, is available for purchase now.  You can click on the photo on the sidebar.  A preview is also available. I just LOVE the cover showing slices of a number of quilts.

Also in Long Beach, I will have a quilt in Tactile Architecture, Central Park, and a group piece called Artists' Village, an amazing collection of 3D fiber houses made by an incredibly talented group of artists!! It is fun!

Next on the list, I have had some recent publicity, which is always good for the ego!  In the International Quilt Festival Houston Class Catalgue, there is a picture of my quilt, A Few of My Favorite Things, used to promote the exhibit of Lone Stars III book.  Awesome!  It's on page 48!

And, last, our new collaboration to sell small works of art in groupings of 8 or 4 is almost sold out!! I am so happy that this has been so successful so quickly!  New works are in the making to restock our offerings!
Check it out!  Art Box csa (community supported artists)!  or you can click on the link in the sidebar too!!
